According to mobile ad exchange Mobclix, Black Friday sales at the App store this past November brought in 57% more consumer downloads, 20 percent more than the previous year . This increase is 43% higher than the first three weeks of November sales alone. As always, gaming apps dominate the scene. However, shopping and socializing apps come in quickly for second place. The most popular shopping apps include Amazon mobile and Yowza while social networking apps such as Facebook and Match.com also reaped in large numbers.
Mobile advertising network Millennial Media reports that consumers are downloading more than 100 million iPhone apps monthly. Blackberry’s app store reports 300,000 downloads per month while Google’s Android has about 20 million app downloads monthly.
Strong Growth in Mobile Market
Moblix also reports that ad-supported mobile applications have seen a surge in popularity particularly in the Android gaming store. Apple’s OS operating system still comes in at the top of the league, attracting the largest number of advertisers and showing the highest rate of return. Nielsen reports that the American mobile market has grown from 1.1% to 64.8 million users with a 42 percent increase in the last year alone. Nielson predicts that smartphones will occupy 50 percent of the mobile market by 2011.
