As the national news media continues to bring the message to the American people that cheerleading has a high risk for catastrophic injuries for the thousands of young girls who participate in the sport, parents can make a difference by understanding what factors increase the risk for catastrophic injuries and by sending their kids to cheer and dance camps and programs that focus on safety.

MSNBC Highlights Castrophic injuries in Cheerleading

According to nationally recognized sports medicine experts including Dr. Mueller from the University of North Carolina ("Flying Without a Net", MSNBC, 2010), a number of factors have led to the high incidence of catastrophic injury in the sport of cheerleading including:

  • inexperienced coaches not trained in gymnastics and safe progressions for tumbling/stunting
  • tumbling/stunting on hard surfaces including grass, dirt, rubberized track, artificial turf, and gym floors
  • lack of sports medicine professionals on site
  • lack of emergency medical plans in the event of a catastrophic injury

Catastrophic injuries in the sport of cheer can be significantly reduced if cheer coaches and school administrators address each of these factors.
