Cell phone use in the classroom offers many benefits, from learning techniques and strategies to security concerns, but they can also be disruptive and used for cheating. Creating a viable cell phone policy is one of the most difficult tasks faced by school administrations as well as classroom teachers. Cell phone use by students may also be a privacy issue, forcing schools to tread carefully if they have monitoring policies.
Cell Phones Enhance School Security Considerations
The April 1999 Columbine school shooting demonstrated that cell phones play a vital role in communication during a crisis. Many parents today insist that their children be allowed to keep cell phones on them, rather than having them kept in their lockers. Cell phones can also be used to summon help during a classroom medical emergency.
Lockdowns and other campus crises necessitate rapid communication. After the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting in which over 30 persons died, many universities and colleges adopted a cell phone alert policy. Steven Sivulich, in an article recollecting the 1970 Kent State massacre [1] writes that, “…the most fundamental problem was disorganization and the absence of effective communication during the crisis.”
